Backflow testing cost, FAQ

How much does a backflow test cost?

Most homeowners pay $55–$160 for an annual backflow test, with a typical price around $85 for a single residential device. Commercial tests run higher ($95–$300). The exact price depends on your device type, location, and how many devices are tested.

Why is the price different for each device type?

A Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ) assembly takes the most time to test, so it sets the baseline. Double-check (DCVA), pressure vacuum breaker (PVB), and atmospheric vacuum breaker (AVB) devices are simpler and cost less, while large fire-line assemblies cost more. Our generator adjusts for the device you select.

Does a backflow test include sales tax?

In most states, backflow testing is inspection labor and is not subject to sales tax, only tangible parts are. A handful of states (e.g. Hawaii, New Mexico, South Dakota, West Virginia) tax services broadly, and repairs/installations may be taxed on parts and labor. The generator applies the correct treatment for your state.

How much does it cost to install a backflow preventer?

A new residential backflow preventer install typically runs $220–$1,200 depending on device size and plumbing. Commercial installs are substantially more.

How often do I need a backflow test?

Most water authorities require an annual backflow test to stay in compliance, and they often send a notice when yours is due. Some commercial or high-hazard properties are tested more frequently.

Do I pay less if I have multiple devices tested?

Usually yes. The first device covers the trip and setup, so each additional device tested on the same visit is discounted. Enter your device count and the generator reflects it.
